Spring Spruce Up; Tips to Refresh Your Closet

As the winter chill melts away and flowers bloom, it’s time to embrace the freshness of spring. While many focus on tidying up their homes, it’s equally important to give your wardrobe some TLC during this season of renewal. Spring cleaning isn’t just about dusting off shelves; it’s about revitalizing your clothes and ensuring they’re ready to shine in the warmer months ahead. So here are my top tips for how you do just that:

  1. Out with the Old, In with the New
Begin by decluttering your wardrobe. Take stock of your winter clothes and decide which pieces you no longer need. Donate or sell items that are in good condition but no longer serve you. This not only creates space but also helps those in need.
  2. Launder Before or After you Store
Before storing away your winter clothes, give them a thorough clean. Wash or dry clean each item according to its care label instructions. Use gentle detergents to preserve the fabric and remove any lingering odours from constant use in damp/cold conditions and remove any lingering odours from storage.
  3. Sun and Fresh Air
Take advantage of sunny days by airing out your clothes. Hang them outside on a clothing line or balcony railing to allow natural sunlight and fresh air to penetrate the fibres. This helps eliminate musty odours and gives your clothes a revitalising boost. You can use this as an alternative to laundering for clothes coming from storage if they had been thoroughly cleaned and correctly stored.
  4. Store Smart
Invest in proper storage solutions to protect your winter clothes until next season. Opt for breathable garment bags or containers to prevent moisture buildup and mold growth. A vastly underused storage tip is to use vacuum bags. Not only do they save a tonne of space, they maintain the integrity of the clothes and you are unlikely to need to clean them when you come to use them months later. Store all clothes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain their quality.
  5. Check for Moth Damage
Inspect your stored clothes for any signs of moth damage. Look for holes, frayed edges, or larvae casings, especially in natural fibres like wool and cashmere. If you spot any damage, take immediate action to prevent further infestation. You can purchase moth repellants in the shops or to make a natural repellant, place dried rosemary, thyme, cloves, lavender and bay leaves in a small breathable or muslin cloth bag and hang inn your wardrobe or place them in your drawers.
  6. Rotate Your Wardrobe
As you transition from winter to spring, consider rotating your wardrobe to bring seasonal pieces to the forefront. Pack away heavy sweaters and coats, and bring out lighter layers and vibrant colours that reflect the spirit of spring.
  7. Embrace Green Cleaning
Choose eco-friendly cleaning products that are gentle on both your clothes and the environment. Look for biodegradable detergents and fabric softeners that minimise chemical exposure and reduce water pollution.
  8. Mend and Repair
Take the time to mend any minor tears or loose seams in your clothes. A few stitches here and there can prolong the life of your garments and save you money on replacements. Plus, repairing instead of replacing is a sustainable choice that reduces waste.
  9. Organise with Intention
Finally, organise your wardrobe with purpose. The main priority is to arrange clothes in a way that fits your lifestyle and saves you time in the morning. Options can be arranging by type, colour, or occasions like Party or School uniforms. Invest in quality hangers and storage bins to keep everything tidy and accessible.
  10. Celebrate Your Efforts
Completing your spring cleaning ritual is cause for celebration. Take a moment to admire your freshly cleaned and organised wardrobe. Not only will you feel a sense of accomplishment, but you’ll also be ready to step into spring with style and confidence. Did someone say Gin!

Remember, spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up; it’s about rejuvenating your wardrobe and setting the stage for a fresh start. By following these tips, you can ensure your clothes are clean, well-maintained, and ready to take on the season ahead. So, roll up your sleeves, put on some cheerful music, and let’s give your clothes the love they deserve this spring!
